The Challenge
Faced with the need to use both CATIA V5 and non-CATIA V5 to complete a single product design and manufacturing task you have a number of methodologies available to you.
The traditional approach is to translate the non-CATIA V5 data to CATIA V5, using either a standard such as STEP AP203 or a direct database translator. In doing so the original non-CATIA V5 data is converted to a CATIA V5 representation. This task is either carried out by members of the design team or alternatively undertaken by dedicated translation specialists.
One downside to this approach is recognising when a design change takes place in non-CATIA V5 and managing the process of updating the CATIA V5 representation to take into account the changes once the initial translation process is completed. The other issue is that the designer has no control over when the data is translated if it is carried out as a separate process.
The Solution
Theorem's strategy for CATIA V5 is to enable the CATIA V5 user to incorporate non-CATIA V5 parts and assemblies within the CATIA V5 environment. This is done by simply selecting the non-CATIA V5 geometry from within CATIA and opening it in CATIA so that the user can use this “foreign” geometry for Modelling and Design in context work.
"Theorem's Multi-CAD" is available for UG NX data, I-DEAS data and Pro/ENGINEER® data
Theorem has created this solution through the Dassault XCAD Development platform to provide the CATIA V5 user with the ability to interactively select and use original UG NX, Pro/ENGINEER® and/or I-DEAS parts. Simply selecting from the "insert" menu means that this utility is very easy to use, with no need to run an external translator. The inclusion of non-CATIA V5 data is now just a CATIA V5 "menu click" away.
Automatic update of changes
Previously, external translators separated the CATIA V5 design from the imported parts. This separation meant that changes to these files would not be updated in the CATIA V5 design. However, with "Multi-CAD", CATIA V5 maintains and manages the links with the original files so that if there are changes within the UG NX, Pro/ENGINEER® or I-DEAS parts, these will be automatically reflected in CATIA V5.
