The world of Process, Power & Marine (PP&M) design encompasses engineering software for the design, construction and operation of plants, ships and offshore facilities. Smartplant 3D is a leading application in this field.
PP&M designs incorporate a large range of items designed in the Mechanical Design world such as Turbines, Compressors, Automation and Control Systems, Pumps, Tanks and Switchgear etc..
A solution to translating the data between Mechanical CAD systems and SP3D is to use JT, Siemens Digital Visualization and Interoperability format now strategically chosen by Intergraph to meet the interoperability requirements for Mechanical CAD .
Theorem Solutions latest JT to Intergraph SmartPlant 3D (SP3D) CADverter has been designed specifically to bridge the gap between the world of Mechanical CAD and Plant Design. In doing so it also contains features to overcome some common data translation issues that arise when data from these two worlds are brought together.
The translation challenges begin when a complex piece of unique equipment designed in a Mechanical CAD system needs to be referenced or modified within SP3D. The problem being that SP3D doesn't normally need to access the heavily detailed definition it works with simplified geometric representations. Therefore if the completely detailed Mechanical CAD representation is translated into SP3D it will consume large quantities of graphical resources making the environment more difficult to work in and slows SP3D down.
Therefore, the requirement is to be able to translate the data while selecting the amount of detail that is passed between the two systems. This enables sufficient detail to be available to complete the design activity without depleting the resources and the overall performance of the SP3D application.
